PrepNext, DC Prep’s alumni support program, is the recipient of a 2015 Raise DC Data Spotlight Award for the program’s innovative use of education data. The $10,000 award will help the PrepNext team further its unconditional commitment to the enduring success of its alumni in high school and college.
Raise DC’s Data Spotlight Awards highlight the important role education data and analysis has in helping youth overcome challenges – rewarding organizations that use data in smart, scalable ways. Consistent with DC Prep’s data-driven approach to student support and tracking, qualitative and quantitative analysis is infused throughout the PrepNext program as a driver for evidence-based student support and a mechanism for predicting and monitoring student success.
PrepNext uses two success metrics—alumni participation and high school completion. Currently, 98% of DC Prep alumni in high school and more than 70% enrolled in college are in touch with PrepNext. To date, 96% of DC Prep's first five cohorts of graduates have completed high school.
PrepNext counselors work with students as they graduate from DC Prep – initially focused on the critical transition from 8th to 9th grade, and on ensuring that alumni maintain the focus and strong academic habits developed at DC Prep as they move to and through the larger world of high school and into college. Every step of the way, the PrepNext team supports alumni by monitoring their academic progress, conducting site visits at high schools, reviewing grades, leading homework help/tutoring sessions to ensure alumni maintain a strong academic standing, and hosting a variety of events and workshops for alumni and families including financial aid sessions, test-prep, community service, and college visits, among others.
DC Prep, along with other winning organizations, were chosen by a judging panel of 15 education and data experts, including leaders from the Office of the Deputy Mayor of Education, Urban Institute, Deloitte and Data Quality Campaign. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education provided funding for the awards.
