Letter from the Principal

Dear BEC Families,

“One of the goals of education is not simply to fill students with facts and information but to help them learn how to learn.” – Zaretta Hammond, Author Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain

It is with great excitement that I write this as the Principal of BEC. Last year was one of the most challenging, unprecedented years in education that we have seen in our lifetime. We all had to learn a new skill and we did it – together. As we close a chapter on this past school year and turn the page for a new year of recovery and re-learning what it means to physically be present in school, I enter our building filled with so much joy and optimism for what it will mean to be a Benning Elementary Panther this year.

As I am reflecting on what my hope is for this coming school year, I am reminded of one of my favorite Zaretta Hammond quotes. It is not enough for us to simply fill our students’ minds with facts and information. It is our job as educators to instill in them a love for learning and help them learn how to learn just as they are, with the brain and experiences that they have, and the fullness of who they are as little people learning what it means to thrive in this world. I am encouraged and fully believe, we are #BEC Strong and together we will shape the minds of our preppies to help them continue to learn how to learn!

Our team of passionate and prepared educators will always work in collaboration with families to provide the best experience for our BEC Preppies. This means that students feel safe and cared for; known as learners and people, and connected to a community they are eager to enrich.

We are hopeful for what lies ahead and are excited to see you – have a safe, healthy, and peaceful start to the school year!

In partnership & service,

Cyrkle Lomax
