DC Prep’s Edgewood Middle Campus (EMC) achieved the highest overall rating citywide as a Tier 1 school on the DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) 2014 Performance Management Framework (PMF).
Of 22 public charter school campuses rated Tier 1 based on 2013-2014 school year performance, just 16 elementary/middle schools achieved Tier 1 status. Not only is EMC a Tier 1 school for the fourth consecutive year, it also received the highest overall rating of any school in Washington, with a composite score of 91.1% across all academic performance measures, and 100% of 8th graders scoring proficient or advanced in Math – a “gateway” metric that predicts future academic success. In the first two years of the PMF (2011 and 2012), EMC was also the top-performing school citywide.
“I congratulate EMC Preppies and faculty on these tremendous PMF achievements, consistent with our tradition of academic excellence,” said Cassie Pergament, EMC Principal. “These results are proof that grit, focus, and hard work pay off.”
DC Prep’s Benning Middle Campus (BMC) did not receive a Tier ranking, given that 2013-14 was the school’s inaugural year. However, the campus received a total score of 90.8% on the 2014 PMF – a composite score that puts it on track to achieve Tier 1 status in 2015. Of note, BMC 4th grade students demonstrated growth or achievement in the 80th percentile in Reading and Math.
In addition, 2014 marks the first year of the PCSB’s Early Childhood PMF, assessing DC Prep’s preschool through 3rd grade students at the Edgewood Elementary Campus (EEC) and Benning Elementary Campus (BEC). As such, the PCSB is not issuing Tier rankings for those schools. However, EEC and BEC have demonstrated strong academic results putting both campuses on track for Tier 1 status in 2015. At each campus, student growth or achievement in Reading and Math is above 90%, and, in some cases, at 100% (for BEC preschool and pre-k students).
“DC Prep’s 2014 PMF results are an outstanding proof point that our approach is working,” said Katie Severn, DC Prep’s Chief Academic Officer. “In particular, the EEC and BEC results in student growth or achievement demonstrate the efficacy of our early childhood and elementary academic model that, when linked with our middle campus model, set students up for long-term academic success.”
The PMF is compiled annually by the PCSB and serves as its evaluation tool for tracking public charter school performance citywide based on a variety of indicators including DC CAS results as well as attendance and re-enrollment rates, among others. Schools are rated in three Tiers – Tier 1 schools meet the standards of the highest performance (65%-100%), Tier 2 schools meet minimum standards (35%-64.9%), and Tier 3 schools demonstrate inadequate performance (below 35%).
